In the heart of the Financial District is an oenophile's dream come true: a shop stocked with 5,000 different types of wine from around the world. From merlot to montepulciano, cabernet to chardonnay, they've got it all. The New York Wine Exchange is owned by brothers Paul and Worrell Couto, known for acquiring hard to find wines that they save for special customers.
Paul, who handles the business end, leaves his younger brother to manage the well-stocked selection of wines and liquors. Since the store opened in 1995, Worrell has trained his palate to detect the nuances of wine but admits that he is still learning. "It's like being in the medical field and going to seminars," he says. "The same applies here." Worrell himself favors California cabernets, which go well with juicy steaks. Having pasta for dinner? Try a Chianti or Shiraz, he suggests.
Stop by for more tips or for wine tastings, which are held Thursday through Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. Or go online to check out their impressive selection.
