Business Spotlight: United States Federation of Small Businesses

United States Federation of Small Businesses

For small business owners struggling to cover health insurance for employees as well other operational costs, the United States Federation of Small Businesses (USFSB) has a solution. By uniting small businesses into an allied force, thereby giving them the status of a large corporation, USFSB provides them with greater access to affordable health benefits and increased buying power for products and services.

Based in Schenectady, NY, USFSB, a private association of small business owners, opened a branch in a temporary space in the Financial District about six months ago and are looking for a permanent location. Currently, the group is working with NYC Business Solutions to hold networking events and information seminars for small business owners in Lower Manhattan to encourage them to take advantage of the resources available by joining USFSB. The programs will also give small business owners an opportunity to network with one another, as well as offer continuing education benefits.

"Small businesses in Lower Manhattan have been struggling since 9/11," says Alex Voetsch, a managing partner at USFSB's Lower Manhattan office. "USFSB will be able to help businesses increase profit margins and to stimulate the local economy."

Some of the products and services available through USFSB membership include payroll management, computer software and security solutions, health and dental insurance, office supplies, car rentals, shipping costs, and comprehensive financial planning. In each area, USFSB helps business owners determine the best plan for their needs.

USFSB charges a nominal annual membership fee, which helps cover some of the costs of its services. But the majority of the services they provide are financed through incentives offered by the service providers themselves, who are happy for the new customers the USFSB brings them. "We pride ourselves on our services," says Matthew Cardamone, another managing partner in the Lower Manhattan office. "It's in our best interest to keep our customers happy."
