Since early 2007, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has been working to make the 2/3 Chambers Street subway station ADA compliant. The project involves installation of three elevators at the station. The first will be installed on the west side of Hudson Street at Chambers Street, where a kiosk will house the new elevator. It will carry riders from street level to the non-paid mezzanine area of the station.
Two more elevators also will be installed in the station, between the paid mezzanine area and the uptown and downtown train platforms.
Construction was largely completed in December 2008, with elevators operational in April 2009.

MTA crews began installing the station’s three new elevators in February 2007. The project took place in two phases, with completion in early April 2009.
The new street-level elevator kiosk is beside the station’s stairway on the corner of Hudson and Chambers Streets. MTA crews will eliminate part of the adjacent parking lane to extend the sidewalk at that location, making more room for pedestrian circulation. The kiosk links to the non-paid area of the subway station below, where riders can pay to enter then connect to one of the two new elevators to the 2/3 train platforms.
MTA is working closely with the New York City Department of Transportation to coordinate construction access for the project, particularly on West Broadway, where a 13-story tower is being built across the street (85 West Broadway). Temporary lane restrictions will affect vehicular traffic throughout both projects and will be posted on LowerManhattan.info as they are announced. Pedestrian walkways will be maintained.
