Built in 1907, the former home of the Trust Company of America at 37 Wall Street has been undergoing transformation in recent months into a residential rental building. At 25 stories tall, this Beaux Arts-style high-rise was one of the first truly tall buildings in the city, and it is one of the oldest remaining high-rises on Wall Street.
Previously serving as offices for Chase Bank, 37 Wall Street has remained vacant for the past few years. Last year, the building was purchased by developer W Associates, an affiliate of Garden Homes. Mike Thompson, project manager, reports that what's needed to convert this commercial building into residential space is mostly interior construction work, which is slated to begin in June. As the project moves forward, Thompson said, street closings will likely occur in the area surrounding the building, which is located on Wall between William and Nassau Streets.
Plans for the rental building call for studios and one- and two-bedroom apartments, some with walk-out terraces. Additional amenities will include a fitness room, basketball court, movie room, juice bar, and parking garage. Retail spaces will occupy the ground floor. The building was completed in October 2007.
Since this is a historic preservation job, the exterior of the building and any original decorative work inside, including ceilings and columns, will not be changed. However, in areas where there is damage to the original designs, restoration will take place. The interior of the building will be transformed from office to residential space, including installation of new plumbing and electrical systems.
