The new-and-improved Columbus Park, located just south of Canal Street in the heart of Chinatown, is undergoing three major capital reconstruction projects, with portions scheduled to reopen to the public by spring 2005. New benches, game and picnic tables, drinking fountains, and lighting will be added, along with a new, multi-use synthetic surface for games and other recreation.

The Columbus Park reconstruction was largely completed in summer 2005. Construction of the park pavillion began in June 2005 and is slated for completion in summer 2006.
The park is situated in the heart of one of the oldest residential areas of Manhattan, adjacent to the infamous “Five Points” -- a spot made all the more legendary by director Martin Scorsese’s film, The Gangs of New York. The park is now bordered by Mulberry, Baxter, Worth, and Bayard Streets, in an area that continues to be a gathering place for people of different cultures and ages.
