In November 2005, ceremonial shovels broke ground at the site of the new Goldman Sachs world headquarters. Located on West Street between Vesey and Murray Streets (Battery Park City’s “Site 26”), the 43-story tower, which is opening in winter 2010, creates room for more than 9,000 employees in 2.1 million gross square feet of office space.
The glass- and stainless-steel tower, designed by architect Henry Cobb of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, will house six high-tech trading floors, three floors of meeting and amenity spaces, and 30 floors of office space. Its design also incorporates environmentally sustainable features and the latest green-building technologies -- including use of ultra low-sulfur diesel fuel -- with the anticipation of earning a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

Pedestrians will have access to a 5,000-square-foot “retail arcade” along the building’s perimeter, which will feature wide ADA-compliant sidewalks covered by a translucent canopy made of glass and steel. The building’s walkways also will connect pedestrians to neighboring buildings and shopping areas and the Hudson River Park walkway/bikeway.
