On March 16, 2009, the South Ferry subway station -- formerly a small, curved platform -- became a brighter, ADA-accessible terminal. The new station now accommodates 10-car trains and has multiple station entrances, including escalators and elevators.

MTA is working with the Parks Dept. to landscape Peter Minuit Plaza (including installation of the new "Dutch pavilion"); and with the city Dept. of Transportation to build the new bus loop outside Whitehall Ferry Terminal. Contract awarded to Tully Construction in April 2009. Both projects are planned for completion in late 2009. Read more about Battery Park Enhancements here.

A ride on the 1 train down to the end of the line is a one-of-a-kind New York subway experience. To exit at the South Ferry station, riders must be in the first five cars of the train, where they wait for retractable floor grates to close the gap between the doors and the sharply curved platform before heading up the stairs to use the single station exit. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is committing $517 million to usher the original 1905 South Ferry station into the 21st century.
Work on South Ferry will take place while subways are operating, but because the MTA is building a new tunnel for it, commuters should not experience weekday service interruptions or delays. The MTA will work on the new station at least five days a week and plans to limit train diversions to nights and weekends. For the very latest on subway diversions, visit LowerManahattan.info's Alerts section or www.mta.info, or call 311.
