Half-Marathon to finish in Battery Park City on Sunday

The New York City Half-Marathon will be held on Sunday, March 21, 2010. The half-marathon begins in Central Park at 7 a.m. with its final segment along West Street and finish line at Chambers Street. The post-race festival will be held in Battery Park City.

FDR Drive Repainting Extends Northward
|
| |
With the pilot section nearly complete, city crews are now starting to repaint remaining sections of the FDR Drive overpass, between Old Slip and Pier 35. Part of the East River Esplanade project, the repainting first involves sandblasting on weekdays. It is performed within fully enclosed tented areas under the overpass, concentrated on the FDRs waterside girders. The project began in early January 2010 near Wall Street and should wrap up around early June 2010.

NYPD Updates CB1 on Downtown Traffic Command

Balancing the needs of foot and motor traffic in the area around the World Trade Center has become more manageable in recent years. And the deployment of more than a dozen NYPD traffic enforcement agents is at the core of that effort. The latest details about the NYPDs Lower Manhattan traffic command were presented to CB1 this week. Inspector Patrick McCarthy, who heads the command, explained that his team focuses on managing vehicular traffic as a means to greater overall traffic safety.

Nassau Street Closed for Capital Reconstruction

On Monday, January 25, 2010, the city DDC launched the capital reconstruction of Nassau Street. Work began between Fulton and Ann Streets, closing that roadway to vehicles through April 2010. Contractor Trocom will excavate to upgrade utilities below, and install new curbs, catch basins, and sidewalks.

MTA Goes Full Speed Ahead on Fulton Transit Center |
| |
The beginning of heavy demolition inside the Broadway-Nassau-Fulton subway station says it all: The Fulton Street Transit Center is rolling ahead. The MTA is ahead of schedule issuing the last two contracts that will see the project complete by June 2014. Dr. Michael Horodniceanu, MTA Capital Construction president, presented the latest project information to Community Board 1 on February 8th.

MTA Revamps Website with Real-Time Service Alerts |

This month the MTA unveiled its revamped website, still found at www.mta.info. The centerpiece of the new site is real-time transit information for all of the systems subways, buses, railroads, and tunnels, including more accurate trip planning using Google technology. With major construction ramping up at the Fulton Street Transit Center, the new site allows Lower Manhattan commuters to check subway status in advance, especially for weekend station bypasses planned to start this spring.

LMCCC Reports Decrease in Downtown Air Pollution |

Air monitoring data from the LMCCC shows that air quality in Lower Manhattan has improved over the past several years. The agencys Environmental Compliance program has helped minimize construction-related air pollution south of Canal Street, despite the unprecedented amount of development taking place. Accorded to monitoring data, there has been an overall decrease in air pollution in Lower Manhattan for several years, including concentrations of particulates.

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and other regulators and agencies continue to oversee air quality at the 130 Liberty Street site. Air monitoring is ongoing with daily samples and analysis.

LMCCC Air Monitoring Program |

The Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center (LMCCC) has implemented an air quality monitoring program to monitor the cumulative impact of all Lower Manhattan construction projects. The LMCCC is conducting daily air monitoring at the following sites throughout Lower Manhattan: 292 Greenwich Street, 80 Catherine Street, 1 World Financial Center and 154 Nassau Street.

With so much construction active downtown, it is sometimes easy to forget that river-to-river rebuilding also includes work over the rivers themselves. To the east, the city is revamping the East River Esplanade , and on the west side, Piers 25 and 26 are being recreated as new park space. We asked Hudson River Park Trust president and CEO Connie Fishman three questions about how the rebuilt piers will benefit both land and river dwellers, and where the construction stands now.
