A Look at Rebuilding Progress, September 2011-2012

The new Fulton Center complex is on track for 2014 completion
The new Fulton Center complex is on track for 2014 completion

The 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be commemorated at the World Trade Center Memorial plaza this month. Since 2001, Lower Manhattan has undergone an unparalleled transformation, with more than $22 billion spent on scores of construction projects south of Canal Street.

Those projects span an incredible range of tangible progress. The City of New York continues its rebuilding efforts in infrastructure, roadway, parks, and piers improvements. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is on track for 2014 completion of the Fulton Center subway complex, among other downtown transit improvements. Private developers are converting and erecting dozens of new hotels and residential buildings from Tribeca to Greenwich South to the Financial District. And at the WTC site, both 1 WTC and 4 WTC topped out at 105 and 72 stories, respectively, in summer 2012 -- with construction continuing across the site.

Following are highlights of some of the milestones and progress that have been made over the past year, along with features about the people and history behind the rebuilding.
