A Week of Festivities to Celebrate Tribeca

Tribeca pub crawl kicks off at Grace Bar
Tribeca pub crawl kicks off at Grace Bar

Tribeca Week is in full swing, and the neighborhood tucked into the triangle below Canal Street is issuing a call to pub hoppers, top firehouse and restaurant chefs, gallery gawkers, would-be floral arrangers and pre-teen fashion models, among others, to come down and enjoy its splendors. Even people who resemble their poodles are welcome.

The Tribeca Pet Party, featuring a People/Pet Look-Alike Contest, kicked off a week of festivities designed to celebrate the many aspects of the neighborhood's unique business community.   Planned by the Tribeca Organization, a non-profit group created in response to the tragedy of September 11, the week will spotlight the neighborhood's very best -- from galleries and restaurants to florist shops and spas.

The Tribeca Organization recently conducted a survey of more than 150 neighborhood businesses and found sobering news. An overwhelming number have been severely hurt by reduced traffic to the neighborhood in the aftermath of the terrorist attack.  In response, the neighborhood organization has pulled together an imaginative list of events reminding people from near and far of everything Tribeca has to offer.  "We want everyone to know that Tribeca is clean and safe," said Sharon Decker, Tribeca Organization executive director.  "We are encouraging people to come back if you used to come, or come now and discover!"

As serious as the week's goals may be, the events themselves are designed with fun in mind.   "The pet party, you really couldn't get any sillier than that," laughed Decker.   But for the person brave enough to acknowledge that he or she has indeed come to resemble a beloved pet, the rewards were real:  The winners of the look-alike contest will be photographed for publication in Animal Fare Magazine, a co-sponsor of the event.

If you're not entirely happy about resembling your poodle, come out instead for the week's spa and fitness days, when area spas and health facilities will offer up to 20 percent savings on selected services and memberships.   In fact, with seven events planned, there's something to make Tribeca the place to be each day of the week.  Other events include the Iron Skillet Cook Off, pitting top firehouse chefs against those from Tribeca's finest restaurants; a Pub Hop through the neighborhoods finest watering holes; a Kids Day, when young models from neighborhood elementary schools will sashay down a runway wearing the hippest fashions from neighborhood children's clothing stores; Tribeca Art, Design and Antiques Night, celebrating more than 60 local shops; and Flower Day, when Tribeca florists will teach easy tricks for keeping your home beautiful.

And thanks to significant donations and sponsorships almost all of the events are free.   "People have been incredibly generous, and we are very grateful," said Decker.

Neighborhood businesses came through with time and resources, and community newspapers, as well as the New York Times, Newsday and several area television stations, provided advertising and marketing assistance.  Other sponsors include the Tribeca Partnership, International Furnishings & Design Association, Budweiser, Christiania Vodka, and Shecky's, an online bar and club guide.

Events begin on Saturday, November 9, and continue through Friday, November 15.
