On Friday, June 13th, the Alliance for Downtown New York launched a free bicycle-sharing program for Lower Manhattan. Funded through a grant from State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, the “Bike Around Downtown” program allows local residents, workers, and visitors to use bicycles on a first-come, first-served basis.
Riders must pre-register at www.downtownny.com/bikearound to reserve a bike for pick up at the Bike and Roll kiosk, located at the South Street Seaport (Pier 17). Adult and children’s bikes are available, all with helmets, along with free tag-a-longs, wagons, and baby seats. Riders can reserve bikes for these operating hours:
Monday through Friday:
- 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
- 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday:
- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The program continues through October 31, 2008.
