One of the goals is to improve economic opportunties along Water Street
|
A new vision for Water Street was recently unveiled by the Alliance for Downtown New York. Identified as a major commercial boulevard running along the Financial District’s east side, the plan would involve capital improvements, land-use changes, and programmatic incentives. The plan was “designed with an eye toward improving economic opportunities so that Water Street can remain competitive long into the future,” reads the project description.
The half-mile stretch of Water Street from Whitehall to Fulton accounts for more than 20 percent of Lower Manhattan’s commercial real estate, flanked by more than 19 million square feet of commercial office space that houses around 70,000 workers. The Alliance’s Water Street proposals include installation of a median and sidewalk extensions; redesigning plazas outside commercial buildings; new lighting and public WiFi installation; and seasonal and other public programming at various open spaces.
