Construction sites downtown could soon get a lot more interesting -- and attractive -- thanks to a new initiative launched by the Alliance for Downtown New York and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC). Together, the Alliance and LMCC have invited artists to submit creative ideas for transforming construction sites into canvases, using paint, collage, light sculpture, architectural interventions, or other means to elevate eyesores into art.
Three to four submissions will be selected and adapted to actual downtown construction sites. The Alliance and LMCC will support their installation over the course of summer 2007, handling permissions at the site and providing production assistance to execute the projects.
Submissions are due by May 1st, and selected artists will be contacted by mid-May for fuller discussion and budget details. Submissions should include a visual rendering of the proposed project, a project description of 300 words or less, a narrative bio, and contact information including telephone and email. They should be sent to Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, 125 Maiden Lane, 2nd floor, New York, NY 10038, Attn. Re: Construction.
Though actual sites for development have not yet been designated, photographs of sample construction sites downtown are available, which artists are encouraged to use to frame a general concept for their proposals.
