Battery Park Carousel Proceeds with Full Build-Out

Batter Park Carousel foundation work
Batter Park Carousel foundation work

Construction of the innovative new SeaGlass Carousel at Battery Park is progressing steadily, and with the help of an additional $1.4 million funding allocation by the Battery Conservancy, it will now open with complete moving parts. The carousel was initially expected to open this spring with only the turntable operational. That opening date will now be pushed to fall 2012, letting crews complete the up-and-down/swivel mechanism for each fish on the carousel, making the ride feel more like an underwater experience.

Currently, foundation work is continuing at the site, which is on the far east side of the park. The carousel mechanism is being constructed by Show Canada near Montreal, and will be dismantled and shipped to Lower Manhattan in March. The pavilion structure is being built near Philadelphia, and will be installed at the site this spring.
