The Battery's new carousel turntable was fabricated in Montreal
|
With crews now completing foundation work on the new SeaGlass Carousel at Battery Park, the turntable portion will be installed in May. The first sections will arrive in Lower Manhattan on May 14th, requiring a crane to lift the oversized mechanism into place. Street closures will not be required on. Similar operations are expected later in the month.
Construction of the carousel began in late 2010, and continues through spring 2013. Instead of traditional horses, the aquatic-themed ride will feature swiveling fish to ride on, as well as wheelchair-accessible seating. Its design and construction has been led by the Battery Conservancy, the non-profit organization that manages the historic Battery for the city Parks Department. It is being coordinated with construction of the new bikeway along the Battery's northern perimeter, expected to begin this July.
