The Manhattan Bridge bikeway-walkway reversal is in place through Jan. 2012
|
On Monday, July 18, 2011, bicyclists and pedestrians will trade paths on the Manhattan Bridge. This temporary detour is necessary to maintain separate biking and walking paths during construction along the north side. Cyclists will use the south path and pedestrians will use the north path of the bridge, which is covered with construction sheds. The path reversal will be in place through approximately January 2012.
The city Department of Transportation is implementing a bikeway detour to the bridge during the temporary path reversal. Starting July 18th, westbound cyclists entering Manhattan will arrive via the south path at Canal Street/Bowery, then detour north on Bowery to Prince, and connect to the existing bike network. Brooklyn-bound cyclists will enter the south path via a detour that circles under the Chinatown bridge approach: from Chrystie and Canal Streets, south on Forsyth to Division Street, then north on Bowery to enter the south path at Canal Street/Bowery.
The pedestrian detour to the north path will use the circular ramp at Jay and Sands Streets in Brooklyn; and at Forsyth Street and Canal Street in Manhattan. The construction sheds along the north path will protect pedestrians as bridge rehabilitation work progresses on the suspenders and cables above.
