The new interactive Travel Station helps riders plan their transit trips
|
A new interactive touch-screen panel is now helping riders find the latest transit information at the Bowling Green 4/5 station. Unveiled September 19th, the “On the Go! Travel Station” works similar to a smartphone, allowing customers entering the station to use the Trip Planner, find real-time train statuses, review escalator and elevator locations, and explore local neighborhood maps. The Travel Station is part of a pilot project the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is rolling out to five transit stations in three boroughs, including Penn Station, Grand Central, Atlantic Ave–Pacific St, and Jackson Heights–Roosevelt Ave.
Designed by Antenna Design New York Inc., the Travel Station’s stainless-steel enclosure and components are extremely durable and easy to clean. It uses Cisco’s Interactive Services, for digital interactions through rich media, live video, real-time information, and other basic touch-screen tools.
The new Travel Station pilot program also complements this month’s launch of the “Weekender,” the MTA’s new web page displaying the transit system’s weekend changes. The Weekender is modeled on Massimo Vignelli’s 1970s-style subway map, and is searchable by line, borough and station, with blinking lights to indicate major changes.
