Bowling Green Pedestrian Improvements in September

Bowling Green pedestrian improvements are coming in September
Bowling Green pedestrian improvements are coming in September

Aiming to improve pedestrian safety and circulation around Bowling Green, the city Department of Transportation will soon widen walkways, shorten crosswalks, and restripe areas between Whitehall and State Street. Starting September 12th, crews will begin by extending the northern triangle, where the "Charging Bull" sculpture is, to just north of Morris Street.

The new improvements will reduce crowding around the "Charging Bull" sculpture

The extended triangle will be marked by new flexible delineators and planters, with the pedestrian-walkway extensions to be resurfaced with beige gravel adhered with epoxy. The wider walkways will continue down the west side of Whitehall Street, and outside 2 Broadway (near the 4/5 subway entrance) they will be widened on both sides of the street southward to the Water Street intersection. There the new pedestrian improvements will tie into the triangular Water Street plaza. Walkways will be expanded to as much as 11 feet, creating much more room for pedestrians traversing the busy corridor.

In addition, the State Street roadway will be restriped from Battery Place to Whitehall, clarifying the travel versus standing lanes, as well as designated bus pick-up and drop-off areas.

The project is expected to take less than two weeks to complete, with crews finishing before the end of September 2012.
