Chinatown Visitor Kiosk Opens

Chinatown's New Kiosk will help visitors discover the area's treasures

"Which restaurants offer good dim sum?" "How far is the famous Five Points?"  "Where can I find bubble tea?" These questions and more will be answered at the first ever information kiosk in Chinatown, which opened December 17.

Located at the divider between Canal, Baxter, and Walker Streets, the kiosk is part of the Explore Chinatown campaign, an initiative funded by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) and the September 11th Fund to promote the area as a tourism destination filled with many attractions. The kiosk's staff will provide, in several languages, useful information about making the most of exploring Chinatown, including resources for how to discover the area's cultural attractions, restaurants, shops, and special events.

"Chinatown is bustling with activity and this kiosk is a great way to highlight the area to the hundreds of thousands of visitors that come each year to shop, dine, and visit the Chinatown historical sites," said LMDC President Kevin M. Rampe.

The kiosk, managed by NYC & Co., will be open seven days a week -- 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends -- and will have two staff members available on site to direct visitors, provide maps, and answer questions.

The kiosk, painted red to represent prosperity and topped with a red-and-gold dragon and a neon pagoda roof, merges old and new traditional designs with Chinese symbols of good luck.

Working collaboratively, the LMDC, the New York City Department of Transportation, and the New York City Parks Department selected the location of the kiosk and provided surrounding landscaping and plantings.

New York's Chinatown is the largest Chinatown in the United States and is located in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Manhattan. Founded in the late 1870s by Chinese immigrants, Chinatown offers an exciting historical and cultural experience.
