New construction codes will go into effect on July 1, 2008
|
To help educate builders on new construction codes, the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) last month launched a city-wide training initiative. The program offers training sessions to members of the construction industry, where city agents will explain the differences between the new codes and current building codes.
The new NYC construction codes were enacted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in July 2007, with the help of DOB Commissioner Patricia Lancaster, FAIA. The codes will go into effect on July 1, 2008, though professionals will be allowed to use either the old city building codes or new construction codes for the first year. The new codes will be mandated beginning July 1, 2009.
"Enacting the new construction codes in July was a historic moment for the Buildings Department," said Lancaster. "We spent four years working hand in hand with dedicated professionals from industry, real estate, labor, government, and academia to overhaul and modernize New York City's 40-year-old Building Code. Now we need them to come back to the table to assist us in ensuring that everyone is brought up to speed."
The training and outreach initiative focuses on training real estate and construction professionals on the new codes, enabling them in turn to train members of their own organizations. DOB also will soon post training materials on its website (www.nyc.gov/buildings) for industry professionals to educate themselves. Additional materials and presentations about the new codes are available here.
