City DOT Issues Safe Bicycling Guide

The guide offers a bike path map along and many other biking tips
The guide offers a bike path map along and many other biking tips

As the city winds down this year’s Bike Month, the number of warm-weather cyclists continues to grow. To help ensure their safety and compliance with city laws, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued the “Bike Smart – Official Guide to New York City Cycling” brochure. The brochure includes guidelines for smart bicycling, tips for how to “read the road,” and practical advice for using bike lanes.

The guide also offers tips for parking and locking bikes, and how to merge, share space, and cross paths with vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Reminders of what safety gear is required -- such as helmets, lights and bells -- is also listed, as well as diagrams for how to safely make turns in traffic, and riding three feet from parked cars to avoid being “doored.” A map of New York City’s bike lanes and other cycling tips also can be found on the DOT website.
