City Joins with History Channel to Market the Past

Mayor Michael Bloomberg made "history" on December 8 when he announced a marketing plan created between the city and The History Channel to promote New York City's heritage. Involving several initiatives designed to boost tourism in the city, the unique partnership will also establish a history center in Lower Manhattan and restore historical monuments throughout the five boroughs.

With a scheduled spring launch and set to run through June 2008, the plan is valued at $19.5 million -- $15 million in advertising, $3.5 million for historic preservation, and $1 million in programming.

One of the initiatives in this joint venture includes transforming the visitor's kiosk currently located at the southwestern tip of City Hall Park into "New York City's Official History Center" -- a central base for information on tours, activities, and events going on in the city. Special bus tours will be organized and maps, brochures, and itineraries will be distributed to encourage New Yorkers and visitors alike to explore the city's cultural treasures and historical sites.

"Tourism is one of our top industries but we don't spend anywhere near what our competitors do on national advertising," Mayor Bloomberg said during the press conference held in the Governor's Room in City Hall. "We need to market New York City more aggressively, and The History Channel partnership will help accomplish that."

As part of the historic preservation efforts, The History Channel, in partnership with New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, will sponsor the restoration of two key Lower Manhattan monuments -- Alfred E. Smith Monument at Catherine Street and Netherlands Memorial in Battery Park -- as well as several others throughout the city.

The History Channel will also air a series of ads on its channel and affiliated networks (History International, The History Channel en Español, and the Biography Channel), feature five one-hour New York City themed segments, and provide NYC TV with $1 million in New York-centric historic programming.   Additional initiatives will include an "Adopt a Monument/Site" program in conjunction with NYC Department of Education, Parks, and Historic House Trust, as well as several education initiatives involving collaboration between The History Channel and NYC public schools.

The newly forged partnership between the city and The History Channel is a celebration of the rich history of New York City as a whole, and as such, builds upon and complements ongoing efforts to promote Lower Manhattan's history more specifically. Beginning today, the Museums of Lower Manhattan, a website showcasing fifteen museums in the downtown area each devoted to telling downtown's history from a unique perspective, will be housed here on LowerManhattan.info.
