Commemorative events scheduled throughout downtown will honor 9/11 victims
|
In honor of the third anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Lower Manhattan will host a variety of commemorative services, including silent vigils, prayer services, and musical performances. Below is a list of the ceremonies being held throughout the downtown area.

All are welcome to view artwork created by children whose parents were killed during the 9/11 attacks. Seen through their eyes over the past three years, this art documents their pain, courage and hope.
Voices of September 11th Information Forum*

Voices of September 11th, a non-profit organization founded in October 2001 to provide resources, support, and information to all those affected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, will host an information forum on Friday, September 10, for 9/11 families and survivors. The forum will include presentations by 24 service providers as well as focus groups connecting people based on the relationship they held to victims (parents with parents, spouses with spouses, adult siblings with adult siblings, survivors with survivors). The forum will also feature a peer support discussion connecting families of 9/11 victims with those of the victims of the Oklahoma City bombing. This annual 9/11 memorial service includes hymns, chants, and sacred and secular readings. Please note that this service will be signed in ASL for the hearing-impaired.
Ceremony at the World Trade Center Site*

Invited guests will begin to gather at the World Trade Center site beginning at 8:30 a.m. At 8:46 a.m., a moment of silence will be held in observance of the time the first plane struck the North Tower. At this time, houses of worship will toll their bells, followed by an introduction of the reading of the names by parents and grandparents of the victims. Moments of silence will also be observed at 9:03 a.m., 9:59 a.m., and 10:29 a.m. Taps will be performed by two trumpeters from the NYPD and FDNY.

Voices of September 11th will host a luncheon following the commemorative service at the World Trade Center site for families and survivors. Guests of honor will include Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, Governor Thomas Kean, Congressman Christopher Shay, and Congresswoman Carolyn Mahoney. Port Authority Memorial Service

This interfaith remembrance service intended for relatives of Port Authority employees who perished during the 9/11 attacks will include a ceremonial candle-lighting ceremony.
The September Concert

The September Concert is not just one concert, but many concerts that are held throughout the five boroughs of New York City every September 11th in remembrance of the day and in celebration of universal humanity. Musical performances feature all kinds of music, from hip hop and pop/rock to classical and world music, organized and played by anyone wishing to participate - both professionals and amateurs. North American Welsh Choir Performance

The renowned North American Welsh Choir will perform a commemorative concert. During this concert, an Honor Guard of 67 British police officers from the British organization "Protect the Protectors" will be in attendance, one police officer for each British victim of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Neighbors are asked to meet at Esplanade Plaza at 5 p.m. to begin a group walk down the esplanade to Wagner Park for a commemorative musical program.
Tribute in Light

Twin beams of light will shine again, for one night only, in commemoration of the Twin Towers.

Evening Stars

"Evening Stars" is New York City's largest free outdoor dance festival, taking place in early September every year since the Lower Manhattan Cultural Center launched it in September 1999. Though the festival has skipped September 11 performances for the past two years, it returns on the anniversary this year with resonant and reverential performances by Savion Glover, Buglisi/Foreman Dance, the Limón Dance Company, and the Paul Taylor Dance Company, among others.
