The road closures are part of the East River Waterfront renovation
|
Starting October 4th, the FDR Drive’s southernmost entrance, from Marginal Street, will be closed nightly for continued utility work associated with the city’s East River Waterfront project. The closure will take place every night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., through October 14th. The FDR Drive entrance from the Battery Park Underpass will remain open at all times.
Then on October 14th, a second period of 24-hour full closures will follow on Marginal Street from Pier 6 (downtown heliport) to Old Slip. Marginal Street will remain closed through October 19th. A full-time flagperson and signs will be posted in the area to help redirect traffic. Emergency access will be maintained. With crews performing utility work and concrete base installation, closure dates are subject to change depending on weather.
The city Economic Development Corporation’s reconstruction of the East River Waterfront has been active since spring 2009, and this summer marked the completion of the pilot section from Wall Street to Maiden Lane. Pier 15 and the new Maiden Lane pavilion are the next portions to be completed, likely by the end of October 2011.
