Make this Father's Day a downtown family affair that lasts all weekend long. Go fishing with Dad in Battery Park, sample snow crab and other fruits of the sea together on Wall Street, or take the whole family to South Street Seaport to learn about the ancient seafarer's art of carving whale ivory.
 


With the abundance of museums, parks, and restaurants in Lower Manhattan, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Here are some of the scheduled activities and events where you can celebrate Father's Day this weekend.
 

FRIDAY, JUNE 13    

Tai Chi

8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
At the end of a long week, help your dad de-stress with Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese martial art, taught by a master. No experience necessary.    

Gone Fishing

Special seafood menu for Father's Day at The 14 Wall Street

11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Join master anglers for a laid-back lunch hour of catch-and-release fishing, fish stories, and facts about the ecology of the Hudson River. Equipment and bait provided. Call (212) 267-9700 for more information about this free activity.  

Seafood Extravaganza
The 14 Wall Street; (212) 233-2780

5 p.m.
Take Dad for a taste of the Fulton Fish market with fresh lobster, snow crab, oysters, and clams at this seafood-sampling event -- and panoramic views on the side. Salad, sorbet, and coffee or tea also included. Cost is $30 and reservations are recommended.  

SATURDAY, JUNE 14   

Drawing in the Park
South Cove
10:30 a.m. to noon
In the tranquility of one of Battery Park City's most popular destinations, you and your dad can sketch or paint the harbor views, walkways, quays, bridge, and island in the company of two artists.

 The National Museum of American Indian
Art and music workshops for the whole family at the National Museum of Ameican Indian 
Ledger Art Workshop
National Museum of the American Indian, One Bowling Green

Learn the Native American form of pictographic history while you and your dad create your own ledger art. Cost is $30 for materials, $25 for members. For more information, call (212) 514-3714.  

Small Plains Drum Workshop
National Museum of the National American Indian, One Bowling Green

A fun workshop for fathers and children (ages 12 and up), experts teach the importance of drums in the Plains culture while attendees make their own small drum. Cost is $30 for materials, $25 for members. For more information, call (212) 514-3714.

Bring your dad down to the seaport and learn about the ancient seafarer's art of carving intricate line drawings into whale ivory. Then, meet some of the inhabitants of the East River and create an original and Father's Day gift ($5 materials fee). Call (212) 748-8758 for more information.  

Public Art Tour
Nelson Rockefeller Park

2 p.m.
Join a contemporary art historian for an eye-opening tour of Battery Park City's twentieth-century public art collection that includes sculptures, installations, and towering columns by Tom Otterness, Louise Bourgeois and other artists.  

Stories for all Ages: Odds Bodkin
Rector Park
11 a.m.
Musical storyteller Odds Bodkin travels to New York City from rural New Hampshire with his guitar, African thumb piano, pennywhistle, recorder, and voice to tell "Gentle Tales of Nature." Call (212) 267-9700 for more information about this free event that's perfect for the whole family.  

Wall Street Walking Tour
National Museum of American Indian, One Bowling Green
Noon
Don't miss this free 90-minute guided walking tour that describes the history, events, architecture, and people of downtown. Meet at the steps of the museum. Call (212) 606-4064 for more information.   

SUNDAY, JUNE 15  

 
Enjoy Battery Park City's gardens and parks
Garden Tour
The Pavilions in Robert F. Wagner, Jr. Park
2 p.m.
June is busting out all over as evidenced by the annuals and perennials throughout Battery Park City's gardens and parks. Whether your father is an avid gardener or just an admirer of nature, he'll enjoy seeing the 5-foot Allium gigantum with its large purple globes, several varieties of purple clematis, and Meadow Rue, which grows 6 to 7 feet in height. Inline Skating:
Ramps & Rails
North Esplanade
2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
For the outgoing dad, take him to Battery Park to test his skating skills on the North Esplanade's ramps, grind rails, and fun box. A liability waiver and full protective gear are mandatory.

Patrick Tull: The Hero of the Slocum
South Street Seaport Museum, Melville Gallery, 213 Water Street
3 p.m.
If your father is a history buff, he'll love this one-man performance of the 1904 disaster that took the lives of 1021 immigrants on the East River excursion on the Slocum. Wine and refreshments will be served. Call (212) 748-8735 for more information about this free event.

 
FATHERS AND CHILDREN: LOSS AND REMEMBRANCE, SEPTEMBER 11

New-York Historical Society
June 13 through September 30, 2003

Opening today in observance of Father's Day, this exhibition reflects on fathers and sons who lost their lives on 9/11, as well as those who were deeply involved in the rescue and recovery effort. The exhibition features portraits taken by New York City photographer Gary Suson of fathers of firefighters searching for their lost sons at ground zero, a memorial shrine created by children, family photos of the late Fire Chief William Feehan, and more.

The museum is located at West 77th Street and Central Park West and is open to the public Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults; $4 for students and seniors.  For general information, call (212) 873-3400.
