Fiterman Hall?s overall decontamination plan is now in the final stages
|
Officials are looking to expedite the decontamination and deconstruction of Fiterman Hall by erecting scaffolding around the building this fall and expect the remainder of the deconstruction plan to be finalized in coming weeks. The Fiterman Hall scaffolding, similar to that of the 130 Liberty tower with its exterior netting, is essential to the 14-story building's deconstruction.
The schedule update was presented to the World Trade Center Redevelopment Committee of Community Board 1 in a September 18th meeting by directors from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) and City University of New York (CUNY). DASNY Project Manager Richard Dalessio also reported that PAL Environmental Services of Long Island was awarded the contract to deconstruct the building.
Dalessio, along with his consulting team from Tishman Construction and Airtek Environmental, explained that Fiterman Hall's overall decontamination plan is now in the final stages and will be submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for review by mid-October 2006. Pending its approval, the building's complete decontamination will commence immediately and continue for four to six months. Deconstruction will follow, also requiring four to six months' time.
Though the exact time and place have yet to be determined, DASNY/CUNY is planning an open meeting to share details about Fiterman Hall's deconstruction plan to the community. It is likely to take place at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in mid-October.
