The artwork on the mezzanine is being removed during construction
|
The Fulton Street Transit Center construction packages are beginning to take effect inside the Fulton-Broadway-Nassau subway station. The most significant of the current project elements is the $119 million “A/C mezzanine” reconstruction, which will eliminate the series of walkways and switchback ramps connecting the A/C, 4/5, and 2/3 platforms.
For work to begin, Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) contractor Skanska Construction has now closed the entrance at the southwest corner of Fulton and William Street. Crews also have begun creating barricaded work zones on the A/C platform and in the corridor to the 4/5 platform, while preservationists this week started removing historic artwork and the iron gate on the mezzanine.
To help manage the more than 300,000 daily riders who use the station, the MTA is stationing several dozen transit agents in the station. Weekend subway service outages will be required for crews to safely perform the extensive construction project, now slated for completion in 2013 -- though various Transit Center elements will roll out as they are finished.
