Fulton Street utilities, streetscape, and open spaces work to begin
|
The city's capital reconstruction of Fulton Street started Monday, July 23rd, in three locations, beginning with preliminary excavation and utility work.
At the western end of the project, water main installation takes place on Fulton at Church Street, as well as on Church between Fulton and Vesey Streets. The city Department of Transportation expects minimal disruption for vehicular and pedestrian traffic during this project segment.
The second location is on the west end of Fulton Street at Broadway. It includes excavation for underground utility work on the east side of the Broadway intersection and will likely require the closure of the tour bus drop-off/pick-up area at the northeast corner. The work there will gradually ramp up over the next several weeks, closing the western half of Fulton Street to vehicles between Broadway and Nassau Street by mid-August.
The third segment of work occurs on Fulton east of Gold Street, where a half-block road closure also will be in place by mid-August. During the construction, Ryder's Alley, the small street just east of Gold, can no longer be accessed via Fulton Street. Eden's Alley will be used for limited access to Ryder's Alley.
This first phase of reconstruction on Fulton Street will continue for several months. The city is coordinating each segment of work with adjacent projects, including the Fulton Street Transit Center, and working with the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center to streamline construction mitigation and communication.
