Fulton Transit Center Work Closes Mezzanine Ramps

Crews are now able to begin major deconstruction
Crews are now able to begin major deconstruction

The next and perhaps most significant phase Fulton Street Transit Center construction has arrived, as Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) crews closed the A/C mezzanine ramps this month. Those ramps, which link the A/C line to the 4/5 and J/M/Z platforms, are now barricaded and replaced by new, temporary stairways. With the interior ramp areas closed off, crews are now able to begin major deconstruction that makes way for the main Transit Center erection. As part of that work, A and C trains are expected to begin regularly bypassing the Broadway-Nassau station from March through fall 2010. Agents and signs are posted inside the station to help redirect subway riders.

The crane brought in last weekend to the Broadway-Fulton site is now installing sub-grade steel for the new main building, which planners call the “mixing bowl” for its position at the center of a dozen subway lines. Construction bidding for that iconic glass-and-steel building is expected to begin in late February. The building itself is slated to open in 2014.

Meanwhile, underpinning to support the Corbin Building is wrapping up. The historic building’s rehabilitation contractor, Judlau Construction, is expected to begin erecting a scaffold around it in the coming weeks. That restoration work will take place while WDF Construction renovates the 4/5 platforms and buildings the new Dey Street headhouse. Also upcoming is interior finishing work for the Dey Street pedestrian concourse, with contractor bids expected this week.
