Fulton Transit Cladding and Entrance Closure Ahead

Fulton Transit Center steel is up and cladding begins this winter
Fulton Transit Center steel is up and cladding begins this winter

Steel for the iconic oculus atop the new Fulton Street Transit Center is standing tall at the corner of Broadway and Fulton Street. Now crews are turning their attention to enclosing the structure. Starting in early January 2012, glass installation will begin on the four-story, square building, as well as on the oculus. The cylindrical structure, which tops out at 110 feet, also is called the solar reflector shell for its special design that captures natural light, sending it to the stations lower levels. Cladding is expected to be complete within a few months, with the main building set to open in mid-2014.

Meanwhile, renovation of the 4/5 subway platform is continuing, and with it the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is planning to permanently close the entrance the southeast corner of John Street at Broadway on January 6th. Riders are advised to use the entrances at Fulton or Cortlandt Street instead. The narrow John Street entrance will be used for construction access for several months, and will be replaced by the Dey Street entry house in mid-2012. The new entrance across John Street in the restored Corbin Building also will open in late 2012.
