Governors Island, the longest continuously active military post, to extend summer hours
|
Beginning June 3rd, the general public will be able to access Governors Island on Fridays and Saturdays to explore the island's historic district, parade grounds, western esplanade, and Colonel's Row. In addition, walking tours of the island's historic district will be given at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays by the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC) and the National Park Service (NPS) to those who register in advance.
The GIPEC has decided to issue special permits that will allow community, school, senior citizen, and youth groups of 25 or more to organize activities in previously off-limits areas of the island at a reduced fee. Additionally, GIPEC and NPS are developing educational lectures, historic reenactments, and family entertainment programs to provide visitors with a deeper connection to the island. The summer season will extend until September 2, 2006.
