Greenmarket Returns to World Trade Center Site

Greenmarket farmers return to WTC site
Greenmarket farmers return to WTC site

Beginning Thursday, June 17, the World Trade Center site once again became home to Greenmarket farmers. Thanks to an agreement with the Port Authority, which owns the WTC site, four farmers will now set up tables filled with fresh produce and baked goods along the north side of the entrance to the temporary WTC PATH Terminal.

"These produce vendors were clearly a part of the fabric of the former World Trade Center, providing workers and visitors with friendly, convenient service," Pataki said in statement. "Their return is a sign of our commitment to making Lower Manhattan stronger than ever."

The Greenmarket farmers found a temporary home last summer in Liberty Park, located across Church Street from the Trade Center site, but because the park will undergo renovations this summer, a new location was needed this year.

Now, set up just outside the PATH station, the farmers will greet downtown residents and commuters on their way to work with friendly smiles and fresh food. The market will open each Thursday for the rest of June, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. A decision about whether an additional market day per week will be added is scheduled to be made next month.

Rebuilding officials were quick to point out that the farmers bring with them more than Jersey tomatoes and homemade jellies and jams. "The return of the produce vendors is part of our continuing efforts to provide an outlet for small merchants to thrive," said Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia in a statement. "Restoring the economic vitality of Lower Manhattan is critical, not only for New York but for the entire region."

Pataki went on to call the farmers' return "a sign of our commitment to making Lower Manhattan stronger than ever."

But for as much as they may contribute to the area's economic recovery, the farmers also promise all the ingredients you'll need for those summer recipes. Says LMDC President Kevin Rampe, "I encourage everyone to stop by for some New York blueberries, homegrown lettuce, or fresh-baked bread -- to support our local grocers and celebrate the reopening of the Greenmarket."
