On December 16th, the New York City Comptroller’s Prevailing Wage Council was hosted by the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center. Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. welcomed Comptroller-Elect John Liu, and reviewed the program’s accomplishments under his tenure, including more than $17 million collected from those who failed to pay the appropriate wages.
Addressing the many construction and labor attendees, guest speaker and Northeast Deputy Regional Administrator for the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Carl Smith outlined the guidelines and the role of the DOL Wage and Hour Division-Employment Standards Administration. Primarily the inspectors will enforce the Davis-Bacon and related prevailing wage acts. There were an additional 60 inspectors hired in the Northeast in preparation of the funds to be received under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
