Work is continuing elsewhere on the Manhattan Bridge
|
Starting Tuesday, July 5th, the necklace lighting on the Manhattan Bridge’s northern side will be powered off in preparation for removal and replacement. Department of Transportation (DOT) crews will also clean the main cable cleaning and paint that portion of the bridge. The northern necklace lights will remain off until spring 2012; the southern cable will remain illuminated throughout the process.
Additional rehabilitation work is continuing elsewhere on the Manhattan Bridge, which opened December 31, 1909. By late July, the DOT plans to erect sheds on the north bicycle path, during which time cyclists will be temporarily redirected to the southern path, and pedestrians to the northern path.
The city is also performing major rehabilitation work on the 1883 Brooklyn Bridge, which includes overnight westbound lane closures, as well as ramp closures.
Manhattan Bridge Community Liaison Teresa Toro can provide additional information about this project at 347-325-1622 or manhattanbridgeoutreach@gmail.com.
