Memorial Steel Installation Begins

This week, Port Authority crews began installing the first steel at the National 9/11 Memorial and Museum site. Occupying the southwest quadrant of the World Trade Center (WTC), the memorial’s extensive foundation work has been underway since 2006. Crews have already reinforced the slurry wall that will be exposed below grade, and have relocated the ‘survivor’s stairway’ to its permanent home inside the memorial.

The Memorial Foundation originally aimed to open the memorial in September 2011, but that date may now be pushed back as rebuilding officials reevaluate the overall WTC development schedule and coordinate the multiple projects. An announcement on the revised WTC rebuilding timeline is expected in late September 2008.
