New Completion Date for Vesey Bridge Work

The Vesey Street bridge extension is set to be removed at the end of the year
The Vesey Street bridge extension is set to be removed at the end of the year

While crews continue to removing the Vesey Street Pedestrian Bridge's eastern extension, unforeseen issues have required the New York State Department of Transportation (SDOT) to push the overall completion date to the end of 2006.

The extension's tube, located between West and Greenwich Streets, is almost entirely removed. Crews are now working to detach and relocate its escalator to the east side of the main span over West Street (Route 9A). The east extension's removal and escalator's relocation make way for construction of the Freedom Tower within the World Trade Center site.

SDOT plans to reopen the east-side escalator on or about December 31, 2006; as an alternative, pedestrians can cross West Street at grade on Vesey Street by walking on the north side of the bridge. The elevator remains operational.

Questions about the project can be addressed to Community Outreach Liaison Patrick Jordan by phone at (800) 714-0454 or by e-mail at route9a@dot.state.ny.us.
