Construction is underway at four West Broadway locations, where the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is installing new ventilation grates along the 1 subway line. The grates are part of the agency’s citywide flood-prevention plan to divert water runoff from flowing into the subway tunnel. The current grates, now flush with the sidewalk, will be replaced by ones six inches taller. Grimshaw Architects designed the grates to include stainless-steel benches and bike racks to help prevent the taller grates from becoming a pedestrian tripping hazard. A prototype was installed between Thomas and Worth Streets in September 2008.
Work is now active on West Broadway at:
- Chambers to Reade Street
- Thomas to Worth Street
- Worth to Leonard Street
- Leonard to Franklin Street
An additional grate will be installed in March 2009 on the east side of West Broadway between Worth and Leonard Streets, once the sidewalk shed at 185 West Broadway is removed.
