In commemoration of the fifth anniversary of September 11, 2001, the New York City Police Museum will feature a special photography exhibit showcasing the honor and strength of the police officers, firefighters, rescue workers, volunteers, and everyday citizens who came together to help the city recover from the terrorist attacks.
The exhibit, entitled "United Response: Commemorating 9/11," will feature 55 images drawn from the collections of the New York Police Department Photo Unit, the New York Times, and the New York Daily News, highlighting extraordinary acts of heroism and courage and touching moments of generosity and kindness.
"In the wake of this city's worst tragedy, New Yorkers experienced the best of human kindness," Julie Nissenbaum, executive director of the New York City Police Museum, said in a statement. "People from around the world witnessed the selfless bravery of the police officers, firefighters, and medical personnel … We salute their dedication and unending strength in the search for victims," she continued.
In addition to the poignant images, the exhibit will also feature some of the hundreds of letters, cards, and drawings by children from around the world that were sent in the days, weeks, and months following 9/11 to express sympathy for the victims' families and gratitude for the recovery efforts of countless police officers, firefighters, and other volunteers.
"United Response: Commemorating 9/11" opens Sunday, September 10th, at the New York City Police Museum, located at 100 Old Slip, between Water and South Streets. Normally closed on Sundays, the museum will be open on the 10th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission that day, as well as on September 11th, will be free to all.
