NYC Shelter Expansion Project Underway

The shelter will double the building size, adding four stories
The shelter will double the building size, adding four stories

Expansion of the New York City Rescue Mission building at 90 Lafayette Street is underway. Located at the corner of White Street in Chinatown, the $9 million project will add three stories, double the buildings size to 25,000 square feet, and increase the number of beds from 100 to about 240. The expansion of the Christian mission, the oldest in the city since opening in 1872, also will create space to house women overnight for the first time.

Full funding for the construction project is in place after more than a decade of fundraising, but the organization is now working to raise another $2 million for increased operational costs once the expanded building opens in February 2014.
