Battery Park City and other parts of downtown are to be evacuated
|
New York City Office of Emergency Management has issued a mandatory evacuation of Zone A as Hurrican Irene approaches. This zone includes much of Lower Manhattan, including Battery Park and parts of the financial district. People should have vacated these areas by 5:00 PM on Saturday.
Residents who live in these areas are strong advised to seek shelter with friends and family outside the evacuation zone. Evacuation Centers will be open Friday at 4 PM for residents who have no alternative shelter.
Additionally all permitted Saturday events not taking place in a “Zone A” are required to cease all activity by 2pm to enable time for event load-out no later than 3pm. The Mayor's Office has cancelled all City permits for outdoor events on Sunday, August 28, due to the severe weather conditions expected from Hurricane Irene.
MTA service including subways, buses, and railroads will begin to shut down at noon on Saturday, so please prepare to evacuate immediately, view detail at http://mta.info/.
