Peck Slip Reconstruction Begins August 1st

The Peck Slip project will continue through 2015
The Peck Slip project will continue through 2015

As part of its plan to improve and update downtown’s infrastructure, the city Department of Design and Construction (DDC) launched the capital reconstruction of Peck Slip on August 1, 2011. The work starts between Water and South Streets, replacing the water main and other vital utilities, including electric, gas, steam, sewer, and telecommunications, and rebuilding the roadway, curbs and sidewalks. The restoration will repave the Seaport landmark-district street with granite cobblestone, install pedestrian ramps at corner crosswalks, and replace traffic signals and lightpoles.

Work begins at the corner of Peck Slip and South Street. The entire reconstruction project is expected to take four years, through approximately winter 2016. Crews will work regular weekday hours, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with extended hours as necessary to complete the project on schedule.

The DDC is working with the city Department of Transportation to maintain vehicular and pedestrian access throughout the Peck Slip reconstruction project. Walkways and building access will be maintained at all times, though parking lanes will be closed as needed for crews to work in the roadway. Periodic roadway closures will be necessary at times, with advance community notification. Signs, variable-message boards, and traffic enforcement agents will help direct traffic throughout the project. Together with the Lower Manhattan Construction Command Center, the DDC also will host periodic community stakeholder meetings.

Following the street reconstruction, the city Department of Parks & Recreation will build the new Peck Slip Park in the median between South and Water Streets. The park’s design will complement the South Street Seaport district’s maritime history with several features evocative of the original Pearl Street water line and tall-ship docking at the site two centuries ago.
