The city’s redevelopment of the East River Waterfront now has funds to complete another key area of the planned greenway around Manhattan. With the help of local elected officials, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation has committed $14 million of remaining post-9/11 federal funds to rebuild Pier 42 as park space. U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and State Senator Daniel Squadron announced the funding commitment in November, which assures the fate of Pier 42, located at South Street between Gouverneur and Jackson Streets.

“The redevelopment of Pier 42 and the completion of the East River Waterfront park will be both a literal and figurative green ribbon that nicely wraps around a booming and bustling Lower Manhattan,” said Schumer. “These federal funds were always meant to ensure that Lower Manhattan continues to be a desirous place for New Yorkers to live and work, and the redevelopment of Pier 42 is a key piece of that effort.”

Elsewhere along the East River Waterfront, the rebuilt Pier 15 is slated to open to the public on December 19th, while the pilot section opened in July 2011 at the east end of Wall Street. Additional infrastructure, Pier 35, and park redevelopment work continues on the project through 2012.
