Pier A is undergoing $30 million rehabilitation project
|
New York City’s oldest surviving pier is slated to become one of downtown’s most notable eateries. The Battery Park City Authority (BPCA) announced last week that historic Pier A’s 39,000 square feet will be redeveloped as a multi-level food and entertainment venue operated jointly by the Poulakakos family and the Dermot Company.
The venture will bring to Pier A’s first floor a restaurant, coffee shop, and oyster bar with outdoor seating, as well as a fine-dining restaurant to its second floor. The rebuilt pier also will be home to a visitor’s center on the first floor, an event venue on the second floor, and a smaller entertainment venue on part of the third floor. It is expected to open in 2012.
The announcement came after a two-year selection process led by BPCA on behalf of the NYC Economic Development Corporation (EDC), which owns the pier. Located on the west end of Battery Park, Pier A is now undergoing a $30 million rehabilitation that is restoring its infrastructure and renovating many of its historic features dating as far back as 1886.
In July 2007, the EDC also selected the Poulakakos family and the Dermot Company to jointly develop the interior of the renovated Battery Maritime Building, located at the eastern end of Battery Park.
