The Pike-Allen Street pedestrian malls reopened in August 2012
|
After two years of renovations, the new pedestrian mall along the Pike and Allen Street corridor is now substantially complete. The northern section, along Allen between Hester and Delancey, reopened in mid-August with improved, protected bike lanes on each side of the pedestrian area, including dedicated traffic signals for cyclists. The center mall itself has been rebuilt with recycled-glass-aggregate pavers, new fencing, seating and tables, and other outdoor furnishings. New utility connections and lighting also were installed. Final plantings will take place this fall to complete the project.
The southern section, along Pike between Madison and South Street, is nearly complete with final paving and plantings remaining. Intersection restoration at Pike-South Streets also is planned for the coming weeks. That segment is slated for September 2012 completion.
The project is one of several parks and green spaces rebuilt by the city Parks and Recreation Department over the past several years, including nearly complete James Madison Plaza, the recently reopened Pearl Street Playground, and several others south of Canal Street. The $9 million Pike-Allen Pedestrian Mall project was partly funded by a grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, which also contributed to more than a dozen other local park renovations.
