Solemn Commemoration Marks 6th Anniversary of 9/11

In observance of the sixth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center, families of those who died on September 11th joined responders to the attacks, city officials, and others who wished to pay their respects at this year's commemoration ceremony in Zuccotti Park, on Liberty Street between Broadway and Church Streets.

As in years past, each of the 2,750 victims' names were read aloud as music played in the background, and the ceremony paused in four places to mark the times that each plane hit the towers and the times when each tower fell. This year, the names were read by responders to the attacks and recovery while family members descended the ramp single file to a limited area at the lowest level of the site to lay flowers.

Families were invited to begin arriving as early as 7 am, although the ceremony did not officially begin until 8:40 am. An introduction proceeded the first moment of silence, at 8:46 a.m., after which the reading of names began. Houses of worship throughout the city were asked to toll their bells at this time.

The ceremony concluded around 12:30, but the site will remained open to family members who wished to pay their respects until 3 p.m. At nightfall, the "Tribute in Light" twin beams returned for one night to the city's skyline as a tribute to all those who were lost on September 11th.
