President Selected to Head GIPEC

Governors Island
Governors Island

Leslie Koch, CEO of the Fund for Public Schools, a nonprofit organization affiliated with the New York City Department of Education, was named on April 4th by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor George Pataki to serve as president of the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC).

Koch permanently replaces Paul Kelly, who has served as GIPEC's interim president since last May. Kelly was on temporarily leave from the city's Economic Development Corporation, where he served as assistant general counsel.

GIPEC is charged with the redevelopment of the 172-acre island in the heart of New York Harbor. In February, the mayor and governor announced a request for proposals for visionary ideas to redevelop and preserve Governors Island and committed an additional $60 million, for a total of more than $120 million, to operate Governors Island and to maintain its historic structures and infrastructure.
