Q&A: How do ferries prepare for the winter months?

Ferry service ready for winter
Ferry service ready for winter

Ferry travel from November through March is much like ferry travel during warmer months, because the boats' climate-controlled indoor areas protect passengers from extreme temperatures and blustery winds.

Crews prepare ferry exteriors for winter weather by salting handrails and installing non-skid deck flooring.  On the bridge, ferry captains are attentive to changes in weather and water conditions, and generally proceed with greater caution-especially after big storms that may have blown in driftwood or caused patches of ice to form on the water.

Though icy roads or frozen switches sometimes delay cars, buses and trains, ferries can reliably navigate through rain, sleet and snow.
