Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) President Kevin Rampe, who helped establish the downtown rebuilding agency and led it through the largest memorial competition in history, will resign as president effective late-May, the LMDC announced Monday, May 2. He will continue to serve as director and executive committee member of the World Trade Center Memorial Foundation.
Rampe joined the LMDC soon after its inception, in March 2002, serving first as executive vice president and general counsel and assuming the role of president in March 2003. As president, he directed the launch of the international World Trade Center Memorial Competition to select a memorial to honor the victims of 9/11, worked with architect Daniel Libeskind to refine the master plan for the World Trade Center site, and directed the development of a plan for the site's cultural components, among many other contributions.
Gov. George Pataki and Mayor Michael Bloomberg both praised Rampe's work and commitment to Lower Manhattan's revitalization. "Kevin helped build and lead the agency that put together a visionary master plan for the redevelopment and created a moving design for the memorial," Pataki said in a statement. Bloomberg shared those sentiments, stating, "His contributions have added immeasurably to the continued success of our efforts to rebuild Lower Manhattan into a vibrant, new community."
"It has been both an honor and a privilege to work on the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan and the recovery of our nation," Rampe said in a statement, reiterating his commitment to continue contributing to the revitalization as a member of the memorial board.
Rampe's successor has not been named.
