Over the past year, Lower Manhattan has witnessed countless achievements in its unwavering march toward recovery. SEPTEMBER 2003

• The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) unveiled a revised master plan for the WTC site.
• Millennium High School, the first high school exclusively for downtown residents, opened at 75 Broad Street.
• The Museum of Jewish Heritage opened its new 82,000-square-foot Robert M. Morgenthau Wing.

OCTOBER 2003

		Daniel Libeskind presents a revised master plan for the WTC site
	November 2003......
		The temporary PATH station at the WTC site opens
	December 2003......
		The design for the Freedom Tower, by architect David Childs of SOM, is unveiled
	January 2004......
		Reflecting Absence, by designer Michael Arad, is chosen by the LMDC memorial Jury
	April 2004......
		The second stage of New York Stock Exchange area improvements began
	May 2004......
		Designs for the Fulton Street Transit Center, home to 10 subway lines, is unveiled by the MTA
	June 2004......
		Enhancements to the Vesey Street pedestrian bridge accross West Street is completed
	July 2004......
		On July 4th the cornerstone of the Freedom Tower was laid at the WTC site
	August 2004......
		The Statue of Liberty, closed for security reasons, is reopened to the public
	September 2004......
		The LMDC awarded a grant to restore the "Tribute in Light" memorial which will shine on September 11

• The Port Authority conducted public scoping meetings as part of the environmental review process for the permanent PATH terminal.

NOVEMBER 2003

• The LMDC announced the selection of eight finalists in the competition to design a permanent memorial at the World Trade Center.
• The Port Authority opened a temporary PATH station at the World Trade Center site.
• The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) completed major reconstruction of Greenwich and William Streets.
• A pedestrian footbridge over West Street opened at Vesey Street.
• The LMDC and City of New York unveiled the firstphase of streetscape and security improvements in the area surrounding the  New York Stock Exchange.
• The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation completed the revitalization of Drumgoole Plaza, the first in a series of scheduled improvements to open spaces throughout Lower Manhattan.

DECEMBER 2003

• The new AirTrain began service, linking JFK Airport with Jamaica and Howard Beach subway stations.
• Rebuilding officials unveiled the design for the Freedom Tower at a ceremony at Federal Hall.

JANUARY 2004

• Santiago Calatrava's design for the permanent PATH station and WTC transportation center was released.
• The LMDC memorial jury selected "Reflecting Absence," the design that will be used to build a permanent memorial at the World Trade Center site, from more than 5,200 entries.

FEBRUARY 2004

• Rebuilding and transportation officials released four options for direct access to JFK Airport and Long Island.

MARCH 2004

• Rebuilding officials announced plans to deconstruct the Deutsche Bank building at 130 Liberty.

APRIL 2004

• The LMDC and the City of New York began the second phase of NYSE area improvements, replacing trucks blocking vehicular passage at seven intersections surrounding the Exchange with retractable gateways.
• The Port Authority approved a $35.7 million contract to fund the replacement of Battery Park City's temporary ferry terminal.
• The LMDC named the firm David Brody Bond the associate architect for the WTC memorial.
• The Skyscraper Museum opened a permanent home at 39 Battery Place.

MAY 2004

• ConEdison completed the electric substation at World Trade Center 7.
• The Metropolitan Transit Authority unveiled the design for the future Fulton Transit Center.
• The LMDC, NYC & Company, and the September 11^th Fund launched the "Explore Chinatown" tourism campaign to bring visitors to the area and improve its economy.

JUNE 2004

• Enhancements to the Vesey Street pedestrian bridge over West Street, including escalator service, were completed.
• The NYC Department of Parks & Recreation held a groundbreaking for the Battery Bosque reconstruction project.
• The Greenmarket returned to the WTC Site for the first time since September 11, 2001, setting up stalls in Liberty Plaza.
• The LMDC Board approved the WTC General Project Plan.
• The LMDC selected four cultural institutions to be located at the WTC site: the Joyce International Dance Center, the Freedom Center, the Signature Theatre, and the Drawing Center
• The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation held ribbon-cutting ceremonies at Tribeca Park and Bowling Green, each of which have undergone significant repair and enhancement.

JULY 2004

• The cornerstone for the Freedom Tower was laid at the WTC site, marking the official start of construction for the new World Trade Center.
• The LMDC awarded a grant of $3.5 million to restore the "Tribute in Light" memorial.
• Mayor Bloomberg and Governor Pataki announced President George W. Bush's approval of a plan to redirect up to $2 billion in federally funded Liberty Zone tax benefits toward other downtown rebuilding efforts.
• The Downtown Alliance completed its downtown Streetscape Program, providing new sidewalks, granite curbs, signage, and street fixtures along Broadway from Battery Park to City Hall.

AUGUST 2004

• The Statue of Liberty, closed for security reasons since 9/11, reopened to the public.
• The east extension of the Vesey Street pedestrian bridge was completed, stretching between West and Washington Streets.
• The LMDC issued a formal request for proposals for architectural services for the cultural complexes at the new WTC site.
• The Church Street post office adjacent to the WTC site reopened.
• The Coordinated Construction Act for Lower Manhattan passed, which will help speed the rebuilding of the entire area south of Houston Street and promote safety and fairness.
