 Daniel Libeskind's vision for the WTC site
  Daniel Libeskind presents a revised master plan for the WTC site

November 2003......

 Path Station Finished
  The temporary PATH station at the WTC site opens
December 2003......  Freedom Tower Night View
  The design for the Freedom Tower, by architect David Childs of SOM, is unveiled
January 2004......  Reflecting Absence
Reflecting Absence, by designer Michael Arad, is chosen by the LMDC memorial Jury 
April 2004...... Stock Exchange
  The second stage of New York Stock Exchange area improvements began
May 2004......  Fulton Street Transit Center
  Designs for the Fulton Street Transit Center, home to 10 subway lines, is unveiled by the MTA
June 2004......  Vesey Street Bridge
Enhancements to the Vesey Street pedestrian bridge accross West Street is completed
July 2004...... Construction workers guide cornerstone into place
On July 4th the cornerstone of the Freedom Tower was laid at the WTC site
August 2004......  Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty, closed for security reasons, is reopened to the public
September 2004...... Tribute in Lights
  The LMDC awarded a grant to restore the "Tribute in Light" memorial which will shine on September 11
  • The Port Authority conducted public scoping meetings as part of the environmental review process for the permanent PATH terminal.

NOVEMBER 2003

  • The LMDC announced the selection of eight finalists in the competition to design a permanent memorial at the World Trade Center.
  • The Port Authority opened a temporary PATH station at the World Trade Center site.
  • The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) completed major reconstruction of Greenwich and William Streets.
  • A pedestrian footbridge over West Street opened at Vesey Street.
  • The LMDC and City of New York unveiled the firstphase of streetscape and security improvements in the area surrounding the  New York Stock Exchange.
  • The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation completed the revitalization of Drumgoole Plaza, the first in a series of scheduled improvements to open spaces throughout Lower Manhattan.

APRIL 2004

  • The LMDC and the City of New York began the second phase of NYSE area improvements, replacing trucks blocking vehicular passage at seven intersections surrounding the Exchange with retractable gateways.
  • The Port Authority approved a $35.7 million contract to fund the replacement of Battery Park City's temporary ferry terminal.
  • The LMDC named the firm David Brody Bond the associate architect for the WTC memorial.
  • The Skyscraper Museum opened a permanent home at 39 Battery Place.
