Work is now beginning to create new SBS stations at key stops downtown
|
Bus Rapid Transit has already delivered speedier commutes to riders in the Bronx, and now the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is extending the First and Second Avenue “Select Bus Service” (SBS) plan to Lower Manhattan. The plan creates all-day dedicated bus lanes, in coordination with the city Department of Transportation, to reduce travel time northbound on First Avenue and southbound on Second Avenue -- benefitting approximately 57,000 daily M15 bus passengers.
Work is now beginning to create new SBS stations at key stops downtown. They include one major SBS terminal South Ferry’s new bus loop, slated to open this summer outside Whitehall Ferry Terminal. The other downtown SBS stations will be built at:
- Water Street at Wall
- Water Street at Fulton
- Madison Street at Oliver
- Allen Street at Grand
- Allen Street at Houston
The stations continue up to 125th Street in Harlem, and will accommodate new three-door, low-floor buses, increased hours of SBS service, bulb-out rider areas, and shelters in most locations. Off-board fare payment also is planned for SBS stations, as part of the effort to speed passenger boarding. The First and Second Avenue SBS routes are expected to be active this October.
